I'm back from three days in Miami Beach where we feasted our eyes on art from all over the world in an amazing array of art fairs, featuring a range of works by emerging, mid career, and established contemporary artists. I visited only a small sampling of the fairs around town, but left feeling satiated with sights and sounds that will percolate through my brain for a long time to come.
We met gallery owners, collectors, and wonderful artists from places like Paris and New York, and enjoyed just kicking back and talking about what we had all seen and heard at the end of each day.
I drove there and back with three other artists from my area. Feeling like the host for that many people was a little bit stressful, with our minor miscommunications and snafus, but we managed to arrive safe back home, tired and laughing.
The bottom line is: go to an international art fair when you have the chance. Just go. Observe, talk to galleries, look at the art, buy some art. You will not see that much variety in any other place.
What I would do differently the next time I go: I would concentrate on the smaller shows. ArtBasel was beautiful to see with its blue chip art, but the other events showcased the exciting, fun, cutting edge work.
Yesterday was a blur, with a trip across the causeway to at Gallery O in Largo to drop off some paintings for a holiday show of gallery artists, then back here to check my unbelievably hectic schedule for the rest of the week. No time to wind down. Sigh.

We'll be watching to see what filters down. Isn't it always the way, after a stimulating event, that there's no time to sit and play with the memories, sort them out and decide what's worth keeping? But could be that it will happen subconsciously... which is the best and more honest way to assess the effect. KJ
Yes, for sure, Karen. I'm not really trying to push it. I didn't take direct notes, nor did I take pictures of specific things that excited me. I absolutely trust the subconscious sorting of impressions.
